Ways to Bust Stress in 5 Minutes of Less

By: Mellissa Tan

A full 8-hours of uninterrupted sleep and spending downtime with the ones you love can go a long way when it comes to keeping our stress levels in check. With looming deadlines and never-ending assignments and group projects to work on, we don’t always have the time to schedule a last-minute catch-up session with our friends and family.

But there are some quick and easy stress-busting activities that we can incorporate into our busy schedules. Here are three things you can do to boost your mood and release stress in just 5 minutes (or less).

1. Take a Few Deep Breaths

Deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress levels in the body. When your body is stressed, your breathing may speed up which increases your heart rate. But when your breathing is calm and measured, it sends a message to your brain to relax. The brain then sends this message to your body.

2. Step Outside

Outdoor activities are the ultimate de-stressor. When you move your body, you produce endorphins that will help you feel good, relieving stress and anxiety while boosting feelings of happiness. Studies also show that being out in nature lowers your stress-hormone cortisol.

3. Stretch it Out

When you’re stressed, your body feels tight and tense, which is why by doing simple stretch exercises, it can help reduce muscle tension. Stretching has been shown to increase serotonin levels, the hormone that helps stabilize our mood, reduce stress, and makes us feel good overall.
