5 Steps to Overcome a Creative Block

By: Saniya Dattatraya

Halfway through the lockdown, sitting down with my dad and discussing the complexities of

life, I found myself grappling with feelings of stagnation. I felt stuck, unsure of how to proceed,

and that's when it dawned on me – overcoming this block was my ticket out of the downward

spiral. Before we dive in, let me ask you this: Have you ever felt blocked, stuck or drained by

creative limitations? If so, you're not alone – I've been there a thousand times. A creative block is a broader form of what we often refer to as "writer's block." It's that moment when you feel drained of inspiration, unable to produce work, or get in a creative slowdown. If

you feel blocked or stumped, you are on the right track – because I'm about to share my personal approach to overcoming these creative blocks.

Step One: Stop Fighting the Block

We've all been there – Every time you try to fight the block it puts you in a death spiral. It's a

vicious cycle that often leads to stress, worry, and even more stress about being stressed. My

advice? Embrace it. Recognize that a creative block is a sign that you're on the verge of

something creative. Instead of resisting it, shift your perspective and think, "Ah, this means I'm

onto something creative, and I'm headed in the right direction."

Step Two: Know Your Boosters

Understanding when you're at your creative peak is crucial. Pay attention to those moments when you feel most inspired, strategic, or on your A game. Perhaps it's after a satisfying meal, with a light cup of coffee, or following a brisk walk. These could be after specific activities, particular settings, certain people, or even specific times of the day. For night owls like me, a cup of coffee and some binaural beats may put you in your element of creative spark.

Step Three: Start with Excitement

Three main stumbling blocks are the blank page, the opening line, and the start! Starting can be the most challenging part of any creative endeavor. To overcome this, begin with the part of your project that excites you the most. Write down your thoughts without the pressure of editing, and gradually build your momentum from there. Find that initial burst of excitement and ride it into your creative flow.

Step Four: Change It Up

Sometimes, a change of scenery is all it takes. Try a new environment, go for a walk, or simply

take a break. It might be as simple as moving to a different room or altering your background

music. Then, return to your work, whether it's writing, designing, or editing. This change of

things gives you a fresh perspective into your project.

Step Five: Pretend Play

Here's the weirdest tip that might get you out of the spiral – pretend. Imagine yourself as your

role model taking on this project. By channeling someone else, you can access a different

perspective and stimulate a fresh way of thinking. Pretend you are crafting your work for

someone else, like a friend. This removes the pressure to impress an audience and allows you to focus on creating rather than impressing.

Creative blocks are a natural part of the creative process. Instead of seeing them as obstacles, view them as opportunities for growth. Remember, you're not alone in this journey, and there's a world of creativity waiting to be unlocked within you.
